So, while watching this video and enjoying the random head movements/arm flailings/finger flutters that help these singers all sing, I can’t help but remember this incident from high school.
A friend and I were talking before we were going to audition for choir. She noticed that while I was practicing, I would point my fingers either up or down when singing a high or low note, accordingly. This friend thought it would be helpful to tell me that neither of those things really helped me hit the notes, and that I should try and sing without using such obvious mannerisms.
I said to her “It’s no different than when someone starts singing runs and they wobble their head to do the runs correctly.”
She says to me “Yeah, but it doesn’t really do anything. Shaking your head or pointing your fingers won’t make you hit the notes any better.”
Not 5 minutes later while watching as my friend was practicing did I notice that she stood on her tip-toes to hit high notes. When I pointed this out to her she said “Oh, I do that so I can hit all my high notes. It helps me.”
And not an ounce of Irony was detected that day.
